SLOW Noisy waste of money
After reading a few reviews I thought this unit would work for me. Duty cycle of 120,000 per month sounded good 40 PPM. sounded reasonable. Well it prints one page every 10 seconds = 6 PPM. My first run was 700 pages I was thinking it should take ABOUT 20 min. It took two days.
This unit is very noisy. had to move it out of the office

Great printer, with a few small drawbacks
Pros: solid ink has a nice sheen,if you use cheap copy paper, people will think you're using nice paper when it comes out of this machine. its also very fast and the software/web interface is the best I've seen in a printer... very detailed stats and easy to use. Solid ink also really is easier and faster then toner, which has quite a bit of value.
Now, the cons: its loud, when a page comes out, someone thinks the door was shut, and the warm up time if you don't want the machine sucking energy all day out of the power saving mode, is about 90 sec. Its very quiet during the warmup, so unlike our lasers, everyone thinks its doing nothing while waiting for that 1st page out. My other big complaint is if the power goes out or the printer has an error and reboots (pretty rare), you're out of commission for 10+ minutes, and is going to use 2 pages and at least a dollar of ink to reboot, especially annoying when I have photo paper in that tray. I realized I needed to put this thing on battery backup with the power blinks we have here in Florida. Many error messages print the message onto the page rather then displaying on the screen, even when I enabled the option not to print error messages, I'd rather get them by email. The software for printing from phones doesn't seem to work well, I'd also like to see it connect to Google Cloud Print through a firmware update.

like the low print costs
Excellent print quality-easy ink loading. and best of all lost cost color printing.

Astonishingly economical high quality color printer
Xerox has turned the standard printer business model on its head with this printer! Instead of pricing the printer cheap and the consumables high (the "razors and razor blades" model), they charge a higher, but reasonable, price for the printer, and sell the consumables for less than you would believe. (Google "xerox cost per page" for Xerox's figures).
We have two printers from this line, and our measured cost per page is even less than half of Xerox's advertised figures. With this printer, you can really get away with not having separate monochrome printers.
I give the 8870 only a "good" for speed, but only because of the longer-than-laser-printer warmup time. The actual time to print if the printer is already warm is amazingly fast - presumably because of the single-pass printing strategy.
This printer has many advantages:
1. True Adobe PostScript - more likely to correctly print PostScript from Adobe applications.
2. Excellent internal web server design. Easy to understand and use. "Printer cloning" feature for easy configuration of additional 8870's.
3. The Job Accounting feature gives you detailed information about consumable use for each print job.
4. Much reduced packaging waste compared to laser technology. No toner cartridges to return.
5. Better availability due to the fact that ink can be added at any time. You don't have to worry about the possibility that one of four toner cartridges may run out during someone's important print job.
6. The color is at least as good as laser technology.
Possible drawbacks are:
1. The economics of this printer get better with higher volume. The warmup delay effects go away if the printer is used frequently. If you have a low printing volume, this printer may not be appropriate for you.
2. It is difficult to write on the output (eg. with a pen).
3. Lamination of output using a heat process probably won't work.
4. Neither solid ink nor laser technology can compete with inkjet technology for photo-quality color printing. But the latter has much higher cost, and solid ink is fine for most purposes.
In summary, if you have a medium to high printing volume, this printer is fantastic!

Huge improvement on previous colour laser printer
This printer has been a real pleasure to use, compared to our previous colour laser printer. It is as fast in colour as in black and white, and so long as we keep feeding it powdery mess-free colour blocks, it keeps churning out bright, sharp output that makes us look good.

The low cost per page on this unit is quality
The reason i chose this printer was due to the low TCO on the unit. Yes we paid more for the unit upfront, but have been able to cover that extra cost by benefiting from colour printing at 1p.
I previously purchased the 8560, and wanted similar functionality, but with lower running costs and this really met my needs.
